The Olympic and Paralympic Games coming to the UK in 2012 has presented us with a once in a generation opportunity to revolutionise our event and be involved in its development for the short and long term. With javelin throwing generally taking a back seat, when it comes to TV coverage and the lack of general publicity, the need to be proactive in generating ideas to put the event back on the map within Great Britain has never been greater.
Since its inception in 2010 the United Kingdom Javelin Association has maintained its goals and visions to develop the event within the UK. To achieve this we have begun with an annual Javelin Carnival and run a training day with Tero Pitkamaki and his coach Hannu Kangas. The next stage of the journey will be to continue over the coming years by running coach development workshops, strength and conditioning development sessions, winter training camps, javelin summer school etc... This is where you come in. As part of your remit you will be charged with researching various opportunities for coaches and athletes. These will not only be events for the UKJA but we will also be working closely with Nordic Sport so that they may be able to utilise those ideas in other territories should they also be suitable around the world.
The UKJA is working in collaboration with Nordic Sport as their official Ambassador with the remit to indentify, confirm and assist with the development of talented athletes. In order to do this our first phase is to indentify athletes with elite sporting potential, monitor their progress and provide a report to Nordic Sport who will then be able to consider various options open to them, be it sponsorship, funding etc...
The inspiration of the home Games in 2012 has been a huge catalyst for this work, but the legacy will be an efficient and more prolific talent identification and development system throughout the UK for years to come; ensuring the best athletes are discovered and nurtured within a well structured development programme, providing them with the best chance of success in a sport they are naturally predisposed for, and ultimately increasing Great Britain’s medal chances on the world stage in the future.
This role will occasionally involve speaking with our partners, any of the governing bodies or their representatives, coaches and athletes so you will need to be confident, driven and presentable at all times. Aside from the main duties associated with this role, you will also become an integral part of the committee and as such will have an equal vote in all committee related matters and will be expected to carry out delegated tasks as set down by the Chairman of the Association.
