Exeter Harriers Throws Squad setting the benchmark!

25 July 2011

Exeter Harriers certainly have to be up there as one of the successful throwing squads in the UK. All but one athlete in the group achieved selection for this years English Schools, and that is truly inspirational. Jack Moncur was simply unable to attend the schools due to being too young but is well known by the UKJA for being one of our Carnival winners and the recipient of a brand new javelin courtesy of Nordic Sport.

It is an amazing achievement for a throwing group, one that well and truly sets a benchmark for others to follow, but its not just down to finding a group of athletes with a little talent. Of course having talented athletes within the group is a good place to start but its having the knowledge and expertise from the coaches that really can develop our young athletes of tomorrow.

George Eccles who leads the coaching of the group down in Exeter says, "I believe our success is due to having a strong team to support our young throwers. Colleague David Turnock and Graham Moncur work with me on developing optimal technique development, and our heavy throws expert Jon Milum provides strength and conditioning sessions for our more mature throwers each Monday evening."

Having such a depth of knowledge within a club environment is rare, but the athletes at Exeter Harriers seem to be making the very most of it and look as though they have been peaking at the perfect time. All performed at or around their PB's at the English Schools with Steven Turnock, who took the gold medal, in the Senior Boys event and Elizabeth Godwin going one better and achieving new PB's to build on impressive seasons.

The squad throw on the two club nights throughout the winter as well as summer, so that the athletes learn to manage weather conditions, which given our British summers can only be a good thing. It is very easy for throwers to get in a groove and only go training when its warm and sunny and then wonder why its so difficult to compete when it rains.

With 2012 just around the corner it begs to question, maybe not for the London Olympics, but if Exeter's example can be followed by groups all around the country, who knows where the future of british javelin throwing will end up? From what is going on in Exeter it certainly gives us a promising outlook.
