My 12-year old son (James) has just started practising with the 600g javelin and after a few weeks is struggling to get above 30m, despite managing 40m+ in training with the 400g javelin. I've posted the following couple of videos of my 12-year old son training on YouTube, and wondered whether anyone has any suggestions regarding how he might improve his technique / approach:
Hi Anthony, I always tell youngsters to try and stretch-out after the throw. As if his flying after the javelin. He's now cringing (Is this good english?). When he tries he also has to keep inline with the javelin. Now he's stepping sideways. I hope you understand my bad english. good luck
Many thanks - well spotted. His body position does seem to collapse quite often after his block. Maybe he needs to work a bit more on improving his core strength and leg strength / hamstring flexibility, as well as concentrating more on keeping his left arm up for longer and following through straighter rather than falling away to the left.
Thanks, Anthony.
PS. I spent almost a year working in Rotterdam 12 years ago, at Nat Ned, just after James was born, and really enjoyed my time in the city.
Yep, Rotterdam is great. If in Rotterdam visit our club! Rotterdam athletics. www.ra.nl I'm now follwing you on your youtube-channel so I'll maybe see some more of your son. At this age besides improving his strenghts.... just enjoy!
Putting his block leg further to left and pushing hard on it as his centre of gravity moved past it seems to have done the trick - he's collapsing far less now on the follow-through (much more like a Superman pose) and just set an U13 season's best of 45.12m with the 400g javelin, so it seems to be working !
